THE ORIGINS OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND CBT:

The origins of psychotherapy can be traced back to the work of Sigmund Freud, who developed psychoanalysis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Freud's approach focused on exploring the unconscious mind and resolving inner conflicts through talk therapy.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has its roots in the work of Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis in the 1960s. They developed CBT as a more structured and focused approach to therapy, emphasizing the role of thoughts, beliefs and behaviours in shaping emotions and mental health. CBT has since become one of the most widely used and researched form of psychotherapy, with applications across a wide range of mental health conditions.

ONLINE THERAPY

There is a body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of online counselling therapy. According to my experience video calls allow face close-ups that sometimes foster an increased sense of closeness. Furthermore it allows users to have their sessions in the comfort of their homes avoiding travelling. Some clients even prefer to have their sessions whist walking in a park or elsewhere outdoors!

EVIDENCE

Research has shown that online counselling can be as effective as face-to-face counselling for many individuals. Several studies have found that online therapy can be just as beneficial in addressing mental health concerns, and it can also increase access to care for those who may have barriers to in-person counselling. However, it's important to note that the effectiveness of counselling, whether online or face-to-face, can depend on individual preferences and needs. It's always best to consult with a mental health professional to determine the best approach for each person's specific situation.
